MARGARET BARNETT
SHIBORI IN THE SCRUB
WAMURAN, AUSTRALIA

ARTIST STATEMENT

Margaret has moved back home after living down south. Home is close
to Brisbane tucked away in a secluded spot.
Being down south gave her the opportunity to study Textiles and
become extremely interested in the shaped resist dyeing of fabrics.
She has a knowledge of many of the traditional techniques from Japan,
India and Africa, and has used a variety of these to pattern fabrics
for garments. Recently her interest has been focusing on the three
dimensional shapes that result from tying many of these techniques.
She has begun relating shapes and colours to the world around her
and to the atmosphere she has experienced in many travels to the
Australian outback. Recently Margaret has been 'dyeing the seascape'.
Influence from the quiet isolation of a tiny holiday/fishing village
has brought about a series of wraps, dyed in colours that abound
in the sea, sand and mangroves.
This obsessive interest in shaped resisted fabrics has seen her
attend every International Shibori Symposium to date. She has been
invited to exhibit in Chile, Japan and Norway as well as extensively
in Australia.
Teaching is a particular interest of hers, and students learn techniques
that interest them and that they feel they can apply successfully
to their own textile pursuits. Margaret has taught for The Australian
Forum for Textile Arts [TAFTA] at Mittagong, Geelong and Brisbane
as well as for Community Groups. Because of her expertise in Shibori
she was asked by TAFTA to assists various International Tutors at
Forum, Mittagong. In 1997, she curated FIBRE IMPRINTS, an Exhibition
of the work of Students of Hiroyuki Shindo. This exhibition toured
the Eastern States of Australia.
